Panchakki
The Panchakki or the Water mill, located at Aurangabad, was built in the early years of the 17th century, by the Muslim Sufi Saint Baba Shah Musafir. The complex of Panchakki had been a place of external abode of the great Sufi Saints who flocked to India in 12th Cent A.D. The sufi's were the Muslim saints, influenced by the spiritual philosophy of the Vedanta, the Sufi movement in India is reminiscence of secularism. The Panchakki, is a calm and peaceful place that visualizes the life that existed in the medieval period. Visitors having sensitive imagination, may hear the beats of drum and the humming noise of the people moving around the complex.
The water flows down through clay pipes based on the Siphon system from the distance of 11 km. This marvelous water mill wax designated to generate energy to turn the large grinding stone, serving as a flour mill.
The Panchakki with all its glories and enchantments has a unique place in the history. In fact it was the residance of populer saint " Baba Shah Musafir ". The panchakki has its own underground water channel, having the source some where towards the North of the city about 8 Kms. away in the mountains. The construction of this water channel from the main source to the Panchakki was started during the life time of saint " Baba Shah Musafir " some time in the year 1624 A.D...
The complete water channel is made up of earthern pipes finely lined up and at appropriate distances, masonary pillers are errected which serve as natural suction pumps to make the water flow through the pipes with force through the distance of 8 Kms. Finely, the water rises " syhonically " to a huge elevated masonary piller from where it falls down into the main cistern to make an attractive " Water Fall " .

Shani Signapur

Shani Signapur
The presiding deity of Shinganapur, Sri Shaneshwara or Shanidev- the personification of the planet Saturn is worshipped with utmost reverence and devotion by multitudes of people from all over the world. The spectacle of the deity in black stone is overwhelming. A unique aspect of this place is, that no temple structure houses the Shanidev. There is only a simple platform on which stands the swayambhu idol, in black stone.
Suryadev(son of Brahma) and Sandna (the daugther of Daksha Prajapati) were Shri Shaneshwar's parents.
Sandna and Suryadev had two sons Dakshinadhipati Yama and Shri Shaneshwar and four daughters Tapti, Bhadra, Kalindi and Savitri.
Sandna finding it unbearable to live with the harsh glare of Surya's light, created her own replica and named her as Sanvarna and asked her to behave as Surya's wife and perform all the duties and savour the privileges of a wife. She made her promise that under no condition would she reveal to Suryadev that she was not Sandna and promised to help her when needed.
Sandna went back to her father Daksha. When Daksha saw that his daughter coming back, he advised her that she better live with her husband only. The dejected Sandna did not follow her father's advise and instead transformed herself into a mare and resided in the Himalayas and started penance.
Savarna performed the role of dutiful wife. She also gave birth to five sons and two daughters from Surya. Surya did not have any doubts about Sanvarna.
One day Shanidev was very hungry and he asked his mother to give him something to eat. She asked him to wait till she had made her first offering to God. But Shanidev insisted on serving him first and in anger kicked his mother Sanvarna. She in return cursed him that his leg would break.

Bibi Ka Maqbara

Bibi Ka Maqbara
Bibi Ka Maqbara is the tomb of Begum Rabia Durani, wife of Emperor Aurangazeb. The monument is an excellent example of Persian Architecture. The arched aclove surmounted by a swelling dome, the idea had acquired its own reputation in India. Bibi Ka Maqbara is considered to be a poor imitation of Taj Mahal in Agra. The Layout and surrounding of the tomb is very much similar to that of Taj but some how thearchitecture fails to produce the magic of Taj. Nevertheless, the monument has its own charm and has been attracting tourist far & wide. the MTDC organises a fair every October as the Bibi Ka Maqbara festival.

Daulatabad Fort (Mharashtra)

Daulatabad Fort
Daulatabad is just 16 km from Aurangabad and is easily accessible by road. Visit to the Daulatabad fort is a half day affair. One can book a taxi cab from Aurangabad from near the central bus stand. Its advisable to go for taxis thru the authorized taxi union which has its office just adjacent to the 'out gate' of the central bus stand. Alternatively, single tourist can also go by the state transport busses or many private busses which ply from Aurangabad.
Have some nice guavas at the entrance (Daulatabad is famous for those) and start off inside the fort. It opens at 7 AM.
After a brief hike, you will reach the magnificent 'Mendha Tof' (A cannon with its head resembling like a sheep) pointing out towards the enemy.
Further up, you will encounter a great moat which separates the fort from the outer boundaries. The moat would be filled with water and hungry crocodiles once upon a time.
The marvellous 'bhul bhullaiya' (Maze) follows the trench and is a dark corridor maze which anyone has to pass to climb further up. The bhul bhullaiya has some perfect traps for the enemy where he could slip and slide down directly into the trench ! The 'bhul bhullaiya guides' present there would explain many things and show you around using a flame torch for a price. For the non-enthusiast, you can always take the outer stairs constructed later by the government.
Many tourists back off after this but for the committed and enthusiastic, you would like to climb further up and in the end, you reach the Moghul Pavilion (the white colored structure at the top) which seems to be the top of the fort but wait ! Climb up all the way to the flagpole which offers a panoramic view of the place around.

Shirdi Sai Baba

Shirdi Sai Baba

Sai Baba Temple is a holy shrine that is attracting millions of devotees from many years. Located at Shirdi in Maharashtra, Sai Baba Mandir is easily accessible from anywhere in India. Shirdi is a small town in the state of Maharashtra. The nearest railway station to this temple is sited at Manmad. From Manmad, regular services of buses and Taxis are available for Shirdi. The nearest airport to Shirdi is positioned at Nasik. The city of Nasik lies at a distance of 90 kms from Shirdi and one can hire taxis to reach Shirdi.

The mystic Sai arrived at Shirdi in his childhood. Nobody knew his origin or his purpose of visit. The legend remained at Shirdi till his last breath and made a kind of bondage with the place. Sai Baba came on this earth with a mission to spread love and happiness amongst the people. He never made any differences with people regarding their caste, color, creed or religion. He left this corporeal world in late 1920's. Sai Baba is commemorated in the form of his shrine at Shirdi.

Sai Baba Temple is open to the people from all religions, castes and creeds. The main shrine is known the Samadhi Temple. Here, the mortal body of Sai Baba was actually buried and later, a 'Samadhi' was built on the spot. Besides the Samadhi, there is a marble image of Sai Baba in a sitting position. This beautiful image cannot be described in words. It appears, as if, Sai is sitting alive and would utter a word at this instant. This image was sculpted by Sri Talini, a well-known sculptor from Mumbai.

In 1954, the temple got the idol of Sai Baba and the image is visible from the main entrance of the hall. In order to get the close glimpse of Sai Baba, one has to cross the hall, where pictures and photos of Sai and his devotees are installed. On the left side of this hall, there is room where several objects are displayed that used to be the part of Sai Baba's routine. Apart from this main shrine, there are numerous places that are recognized with the life of Sai Baba.

One such place is 'Dwarkamayee Masjid' and this place was really adorable to Sai. He used to sit here all day, on a big stone that is conserved till date. Here, a portrait of Sai Baba adorns the site and this portrait was painted during the lifetime of the great soul. Just before the portrait, the holy dhuni can be found burning. This was started by Sai himself and ever since, the fire is set alive. From this dhuni, vibhuti (sacred ash) is taken out and distributed as 'prasad' of the Lord.

The vibhuti is said to possess the healing powers and people take this to their homes. This place also possess a chakki (grinding stone), a bathing stone, a wooden pillar, chulha (stove), padukas (slippers) and a plant of Tulsi. These things were part of Sai's daily life. Today, these articles are in the same position, as they were positioned by Sai.

Another place to visit is Chavadi, where Sai used to take rest every alternate night. Besides Chavadi, 'Gurusthan' is one more place where Sai used to sit under a Neem (margosa) tree. As a matter of fact, the leaves of this tree are sweet and it is believed that with the divinity of Baba, they have lost their bitterness.

Besides all these places, Lendi Nall and Nandadeep are two other destinations that have marks of the holy man. The big temple complex comprises all these places and numerous gardens in it. The divine aura of Sai Baba is enchanting and it attracts millions of people every year. One, who comes to this temple for once, gets a celestial contentment that lasts for the entire life.

Aurangabad City Guide

Aurangabad city is located in the northern part of the state of Maharashtra in the western region of India. It is 403 km from Mumbai (Bombay). Surrounded by hills, the city is on the banks of the Kham River. The city boasts of Bibi-Ka-Maqbara, a tomb that has some resemblance to the Taj Mahal. The importance of Aurangabad is great, owing to its proximity with world heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora. These sites have Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu temples.
History : Aurangabad is tinged with a distinctive Arabian aura. The city was named after Aurangazeb but earlier it was known as Khadke. Square shaped, stone homes with smooth edges lone the street in small sections of town. Very few peple use this new name and the city's Muslim Havor is evident/ tangible amidst the tourist boom and the economic development typist of Mumbai's hinterland. Their efforts like most of their kind however seem an ineffectual charade of semantics; few use the new name, Sambhajinagar and the city's Muslim flavor endures amid the tourist boom and the economic development typical of Mumbai's hinterland. Buddhism was introduced to this region during the reign of the powerful Mauryan Emperors and its rapid acceptance is evident in the profusion of Buddhist cave temples found in and around modern aurangabad. The Hindu temples of Ellora built by the kings of the Satvahana and Rashtrakuta dynasties predate the influx of Buddhism. Strategically located in the centre of India, the region was considered the safest from the marauding armies of the Afghan and Central Asian raiders. The Tughlaq King Mohammed bin Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate moved his capital from Delhi, along with the citizens to this area in the 14th century but failed due to poor logistical planning
Tourist Attraction of Aurangabad :

Ellora Caves. (Mharashtra)

The Ellora caves, dating back to the ancient and early medieval Indian era between 5th century CE to the 11th century CE, is located at a distance of 28 kilometers from Aurangabad, one of the leading cities in Maharashtra. These caves which are 30 in number and a combination of Jain, Buddhist and Hindu caves, symbolises the love and respect of all the religions in India, which has been in the root of Indian tradition and culture right from the ancient period, or rather since the prehistoric era.

The Caves
All the 30 excavated rock cut caves have been categorised into three parts:

  • Buddhist Caves : Cave numbers 1 to 12 at the Southern end - 5th century CE to 7th century CE.
  • Hindu Caves : Cave numbers 13 to 29 in the middle - 8th century CE to 10th century CE.
  • Jain Caves : Cave numbers 30 to 34 at the northern end - 9th century CE to 11th century CE.
  • The Buddhist Caves : The Buddhist caves, cave numbers 1 to 12, are the earliest structures of the Ellora caves, dating back to the 5th century CE to 7th century CE. These caves, which comprise mostly the monasteries or viharas, used by the Buddhist monks for their residential and meditation purposes, stretches up to the northern end of the Ellora. The Buddhist monasteries, dedicated to the Buddha, also includes the images of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and other saints.

Architecture

The Buddhist caves, cave numbers 1 to 12, form an integral of the Ellora caves, the finest example of the cave and temple architecture in the Indian sub-continent. The Buddhist monasteries in the Ellora caves are large and multi-storeyed structures. The most important of all these cave shrines is the cave number 10, a Chaitya hall, which further consists of a large 15 feet Buddha's statue in 'preaching pose'. Also known as the 'Carpenter's cave', the cave is more of a cathedral like large hall, whose ceilings give an impression of wooden beams. The sculpture of all these Buddhist caves have been dedicated to the Buddha in His different forms.

The Hindu Caves
The Hindu caves, cave numbers 13 to 29, belongs to the early Indian medieval period which is from the 8th century CE to the 10th century CE. Lying in the middle of the Ellora caves, the temples of the Hindu caves have mainly been dedicated to the Hindu Gods Shiva and Vishnu, who have been depicted in various forms.

  • Architecture : The main aspect to boast of in the Hindu temples of the Ellora caves is the unique architecture and creative sculpture of these caves. A perfect symbol of Indian planning and architecture, these cave temples, carved from top to down in the form of a ladder, are the masterpieces of the Ellora caves.

The best example of all these caves is the cave number 16, known as the Kailasha or Kailasanatha temple, the largest monolithic structure in the world, dedicated to the God Shiva. The multi storey structure of the Kailasha temple though covers a vast area but interestingly was carved of a single rock. The gateway of the temple is also double storeyed and opens in a U-shaped courtyard, which is again surrounded by three storeyed large galleries containing sculptures of different deities. The temple complex also comprises image of the sacred Bull, Nandi, just in front of the central temple. The Nandi Mandap and the main Shiva temple, both about 7 meters high, have been constructed in two stories. The lower part of the Nandi Mandap, a solid structure, has been decorated with numerous carvings. The cave, besides including rooms, halls, windows, pillars and images of the deities, have further been carved with niches, plasters, mithunas and other Shaivite(related to God Shiva) and Vaishnavite(related to Lord Vishnu) figures. The unique and magnificent architecture of the Cave 16 itself makes it clear why it took about 100 years to erect this cave.

Other Hindu caves includes Rameshwara caves and the Das Avatara cave(depicting 10 incarnations of Vishnu) among many others.

Jain Caves
The Jain caves, which dates back from the 9th century CE to 11th century CE, reflects a vast dimension of the Jain philosophy and values. The Jain tradition, which strictly follows asceticism, are evident in all the Jain caves - Caves 32 to 34.

Architecture : The Jain caves reflect a detailed art work along with its ascetic principle thereby widening its prospect of uniqueness. Cave number 32, a Jain shrine with lotus carvings on the ceilings, is a fine example of the Indian architecture. Another rich painting in the Jain caves is related to a Yakshini sitting in a lion under a mango tree.

Ajanta Caves.(Maharashtra)

The Ajanta Caves are a group of 28 caves hewn from a crescent shaped , near vertical rock face, and which contain spectacular ancient art painting and sculptures. The first of these caves dates back to 200 BC while the later caves are dated to 250 AD.

Located in Maharashtra, about 30miles from Jalgaon town, the caves are situated in the forests of Sahyadri Hills, and were brought to light in 1819, after a passing British army contingent stumbled upon one of these caves, overgrown with vegetation, leading to the discovery of the other caves, some of them unfinished.

The attraction of the caves lies in the incredible detailed art work on the walls inside the caves as well as the Buddhist influenced architecture and construction of the caves. The first caves are infact thought to have been made by Buddhist monks who lived in this area. Each of the caves have unique features about them though some are unfinished.
